How to Pick Curtains

New curtains are one of the easiest and least expensive ways of transforming a room. They can add a splash of color and texture, invigorating any room in the house. There is a variety of patterns, lengths, fabrics and colors of curtains to choose from, and making a decision can be overwhelming. Picking out curtains doesn't have to be difficult, however, when you keep in mind a few key considerations. When shopping for curtains, use your style and budget to help guide your decision making.

Step 1: Use the tape measure to find the width of the windows that you are buying the curtains for. Choose curtains that are at between 4 and 6 inches wider than your windows.

Step 2: Measure from the top of the window to the floor if you want long, flowing curtains.

Step 3: Measure the height of the window if you want curtains that are the same size as the window. Choose curtains that are 2 to 4 inches longer than the window frame.

Step 4: Write down all your measurements.

Step 5: Find opaque curtains that are made of silk, cotton or linen if you want to block sunlight. Buy curtain liners to block more light and to help with insulation.

Step 6: Choose sheer or lace fabrics to filter and soften natural light. Buy opaque curtains to layer with sheer curtains for added privacy. Layering curtains can also add visual depth to the window treatment.

Step 7: Consider the color and style of the room the curtains will be in. Decide if you want bright or neutral curtains and whether you want patterns or solids.

Step 8: Find curtain rods that are 4 to 6 inches longer than the width of your windows. Curtain rods are available in a variety of materials and finishes. Choose the curtain rods according to the style of your room.
